American Born Chinese redistributes
Journey to the West
American Born Chinese tells three interweaving tales involving the Monkey King and Jin. One of these tales is a remix of novel Journey to the West. American Born Chinese's use of the Monkey King helps redistribute an ancient text to newer generations.
Journey to the West
Written in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty, Journey to the West introduces the world to the Monkey King. The Monkey King's story in American Born Chinese features other characters inspired by Journey to the West as well, such as Tze-Yo-Tzuh.

New Story, Same Theme
American Born Chinese is essentially a remix of the beginning of the Monkey King's spiritual Journey within Journey to the West. Jin's story mirrors the monkey king's while being able to be more relatable to a 21st century audience while still providing the important philosophical and moral lessons.
